When she was seven the family moved to Thistle Island in the Spencer Gulf, where she first developed an interest in geology. Initially, she was educated by correspondance until she was sent, on a scholarship, to the Wilderness School in Adelaide as a border. She studied for her Bachelor of Science in geology at Adeliade University before undertaking postgraduate studies. She undertook research into tertiary aged microfossils fro her Ph.D under the guidance of Professor Martin Glaessner. In the early 1980’s, some diligent family members did their research and published a book titled ”Mary Wade to Us”. It told the early stories and traced the family trees of thousands of Mary’s descendants.

In her lifetime, her family had grown to include five generations and over three hundred descendants. Now, Mary’s descendants number in the tens of thousands, including Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia. Months earlier Mary, , had been arrested and found guilty of stealing another child’s clothes. Her death sentence, commuted to transportation for life, was bitter sweet. Mary had escaped the gallows but would never see her family again. She spent the spring of 1789 in horrendous conditions at Newgate Prison.

The project purpose was to transform Juniperina Juvenile Justice Centre to Mary Wade Maximum Security Female Remand Centre in Lidcombe. Brooker died in 1833, and Mary remained in the Illawarra for the rest of her life. According to the family history, Mary had 21 children and their descendants number in the thousands. They include Kevin Rudd, the former prime minister of Australia.

At the time of her death, Mary had over 300 living descendants and is considered as one of the founding mothers of the early settlers to Australia. Today her descendants number in the tens of thousands, including Kevin Rudd, the former Prime Minister of Australia. Mary’s story is told in the book “Mary Wade to Us” published as a family tree, noted in the further reading below. This, and the stories of Mr Rudd’s other convict ancestors has now been collated into two leather-bound volumes by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is kept in the National Library of Australia in Canberra.

She was one of a boatload of female convicts sent on the Lady Juliana to the fledgling colony of New South Wales in July 1789. In what was one of the longest recorded convict voyages Mary finally arrived in Sydney Cove as a 14 year old in June 1790 having spent more than 10 months at sea. Rapidly developing an affinity for the Queensland Outback, she established many local contacts and through teir assistancew collected new dinosaur remains in the Winton district.

Several thousand copies were printed and distributed but the book is now scarce and out of print. The three officers helped to save the life of one inmate, remove another trapped inmate from inside of a cell and extinguish the flames. – I only went because I thought the gentlewoman would have her property again, the child’s frock, and cap, and tippet.

The Mary Wade Correctional Centre was established in 2017 as a maximum security custodial centre for women on remand only. As a standalone centre for this purpose, it is unique in NSW. In 1990, she excavated , in the Hughenden area, the most complete pliosaur known to date. She then turned to problematic mollusc fossils from the inland sea deposits of the Great Artesian Basin, describing the remains of giant squids that inhabited western Queensland 100 million years ago. In 1987, with the help of local people in the Hughenden area, she recovered the second only skull of the Queensland iconic dinosaur Muttaburasaurus.

Mary Wade was transported to New South Wales at the age of 11 in 1789. She had been found guilty of highway robbery and sentenced to death by hanging at her trial. However, as was often the case in such trials, her death sentence was commuted to transportation to the penal colony of New South Wales for life.
